New Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made a direct plea to Lionel Messi to stay at he Spanish side as he celebrated his inauguration.

Laporta and Messi, who were both part of Barca’s golden age in the first decade of the 21st century, were pictured embracing prior to the new president’s speech.

And a significant part of the address was aimed directly at the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, who last summer demanded predecessor Josep Bartomeu let him leave.

“In our first spell we had the best players in Barca history, but if we were successful it was because we had stability,” Laporta explained.

“It is Barcelona’s unity which gives you stability and I invite everyone at Barcelona to think about what they can do for Barca.

“I am here to make decisions, like convincing Leo to carry on, taking advantage of the fact that he is here. He knows that.

“You know the affection I hold for you and we will do whatever it takes to keep you here. You know you cannot leave, Leo.

“We will not be able to do it alone. As our anthem says, we are strong all together. More so in these most difficult times. We know how to do it.

“When the pandemic is over our revenue will return. That will be fixed. There will be strong leadership, because I am well-accompanied. We will make decisions. To defend the club you have to live and breathe it and we do that as much as possible.”

Despite sack: Tottenham to still pay Jose Mourinho £10m next season

Despite being sacked and even already finding a new job, Tottenham football club will still pay former boss Jose Mourinho £10million.

Just 15 days after being sacked by the London outfit, Jose Mourinho found a new job with Roma, signing a three-year deal with the Italians worth £5m a year — compared to the annual £15m he was getting at Spurs.

But as part of his severance package he entered into with Tottenham, the club will pay him the shortfall in salary if he took another post on lower wages before the end of his contract next summer.

That means when Mourinho takes over at the Stadio Olimpico this summer he will receive £5m from Roma and, for next season only, £10m from Tottenham.

But Spurs see it as a financial victory, as they have saved £5m on what they would have paid him had he not accepted another job.

The ex-Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United boss wants to show he is not at fault for his Tottenham sack.

He also reportedly wants to show that he has not been affected by his shock departure after just 17 months in charge.

Odion Ighalo reveals why he left Manchester United, fires at Solskjaer

Odion Ighalo has revealed why he left his boyhood club Manchester United and turned down offers from West Brom and West Ham’s to stay in the Premier League.

He also said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was “unfair” to him during his time at Manchester United.

The former Super Eagles of Nigeria captain joined Manchester United in January 2020 from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua on an initial six-month loan.

His deal was later extended in June 2020 until January this year, when he left for Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab after scoring five goals in 23 appearances for the Premier League club.

But the 31-year-old started just two games this season before departing.

And while Ighalo continues to “love” the Red Devils, he admits he had to leave after he was regularly snubbed by Solskjaer.

Speaking to Sky Sports about his departure, Ighalo says he is ‘so happy’ he was able to represent Manchester United but admits he left his dream club due to a lack of game time.

“There wasn’t much possibility because I wanted more playing time,” Ighalo told Sky Sports when asked if he could have extended his stay with United.

“At my age, I want to play and not just sit on the bench and not have any minutes.

“I didn’t just want to be there picking up a salary – I wanted to be involved so I said to my agent that if an offer comes in, I will look at it and see what’s best for me, which is what I did.

“After my initial loan was extended, I did not play much which was perhaps a bit unfair but as I said, I am always grateful for the opportunity.”
