He promised not to relent in the efforts to turn the fortunes of the State around.

The Governor also highlighted his efforts at securing the State, pointing out the ongoing Light-Up Ibadan project, which he said would be extended to other major cities as well as collaboration with all security agencies through the provision of necessary equipment and support were geared towards improved security, which is a key part of his administration’s four-point agenda.

In the area of economic expansion, Governor Makinde explained that the State’s economy was already being driven by the revolution in agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) development, and infrastructure development among others.

He encouraged the residents of the State to think of contributions they could make to make Oyo State the State of their dreams.

“You listened. And on March 9, 2019, you came out en masse and gave us your mandate. You showed, through your votes, that you have confidence in us and our ability to deliver on our promises.

“Since May 29, 2019, we have been delivering on those promises, in little ways and significant ways. And you have stood by us, supporting, and defending us. You can rest assured; we will never take your loyalty for granted.”

Unlicensed Teachers: Federal Govt Gives Marching Order To TRCN

Published

on

The Federal Government is set to begin enforcement and monitoring of compliance with her directive that only qualified and professionals licensed by Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) teach in both public and private schools nationwide.

The Registrar TRCN, Professor Segun Ajiboye who stated this in Ibadan while speaking with newsmen added that the first phase of the compliance monitoring and documentation will take place nationwide between March 9 and 17.

According to Ajiboye, the task force has been activated to beam search light into the credentials of those teaching in government and private schools for appropriate commendation or sanction as the case may be.

The National Council on Education declared December 31, 2019 as the last day for unlicensed teachers to be registered with TRCN or get booted out of the classroom.

Ajiboye who maintained that no serious nation allows her future leaders to be misguided by quacks stated that the Buhari led administration has a dream to ensure professional teachers are given neccessary tools to excel.

In a related development, Ajiboye says TRCN takes exception to States recruiting teachers and treating her license as “added advantage” saying that TRCN certification is a must criterion of employment.

” TRCN Commences Compliance Monitoring across the country. As the December 31, 2019 deadline given by the National Council on Education for anybody who wants to practise as a teacher in the country to get qualified, registered and licensed by TRCN has passed, the regulatory authority is embarking on verification of compliance in all the States of the Federation and FCT. The exercise is however put on hold in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States due to the challenges there. The TRCN team in each State will be led by a Professor of Education or a Provost of a College of Education. The first leg of the exercise will start on the 9th of March and end on the 17th. However this exercise will be a continuous one as TRCN has created a Compliance & Enforcement Unit at its head office for routine monitoring. Prior to the commencement of the monitoring, a technical team was set up by TRCN and a meeting was held with all the State Coordinators where issues of logistics were discussed and harmonised. TRCN takes exception to some States making TRCN Certificate optional in their recruitment of teachers. This practice must stop because it is mandatory for anyone who wants to profit from the job of a teacher to be registered with the regulatory authority. It is therefore considered absurd for any State to say ‘TRCN Certificate will be an added advantage’. Whereas that is supposed to be the number one criterion. This is the global best practice. There is no serious Nation that allow just anybody into its classrooms to teach their children. There must be evidence of professional certification to practice as a teacher.

Professor Olabode Obafemi Sowande delivers Ajayi Crowther Varsity's 14th inaugural lecture

…establishes the importance of the maxim, “Man know thyself”

Professor Olabode Sowande, a professor of Performing Arts says the true essence of man’s existence is in self knowledge and identity.

Sowande explains this while delivering the 14th Inaugural Lecture of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo with the title, “The Ultimate Goal of Playwright and Drama is Man Know Thyself”.

The professor in his lecture, chronicles his journey as he metamorphosed from an innocent yet ignorant young writer to a creative writer and dramatist whose works preaches his true identity.

He said, “The issue of identity and self knowledge has been a continuous focus of my interest over the years with the Sowande’s family and the society at large.”

The creative writer noted that the maxim, “Man know thyself” attributed to the Athenian philosopher, Socrates, is not only for the purpose of religion but is aimed at defining the absolutes of human psychology towards interpersonal relationships in any society.

He opined that a state peopled by persons ignorant of who they really are will soon be lost in conflicts, crises and self destruction and even unhealthy pathologies. Therefore, he recommended that self knowledge should be the aim of society.

He stressed the need for every man to truly identify his weaknesses, saying a successful man is one who identifies and overcomes his weakness.

He said: “We are only defined by what we know of ourselves. So, knowing your weaknesses and overcoming them is what the lecture is about. And it is a virtue that comes to us from the Greco-Roman civilization.

“We have the same thing in various cultures of the world, what you see on the surface and what is below the surface, but essentially man knows thyself. If you don’t know yourself, you can’t succeed.”

Throwing out appreciations to all who had helped him climbed successfully to the peak of his career, the professor thanked the entire Sowande family, Ola Rotimi, Yinka Craig, Prof Wole Soyinka amongst others for their support.

He also appreciated the Vice Chancellor, ACU, Rt. Rev. Dapo Asaju and the entire University community for the opportunity to be the pioneer head of Performing Arts department of the institution.

The event was graced by the VC of the institution, academics, members of staff and students of the institution, theatre practitioners and other dignitaries.

…Lagos Graduates Teachers In Professional And Training Programme

…Gov Promises Car Gifts To Best Primary School Teachers

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday reaffirmed his administration’s plan to transform the educational sector of the State, vowing to increase government’s investment for the good of the pupils.

Over 3000 teachers from various schools and education districts across the State converged at De Blue Roof of the Lagos Television, Ikeja where the Governor formally launched the EKOEXCEL, a teachers’ professional development and training programme.

Earlier, primary school teachers went through a 2 weeks training process, organised by the State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB) to increase capacity and develop manpower of teachers in the State.

Sanwo-olu noted that at the end, over 14,000 primary school teachers would have benefited from the initiative while over 500,000 pupils would have been positively impacted.

The Governor said: “I am particularly happy that this programme is holding at a time when all hands are on deck to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning is improved across all our schools in the State.

“As a responsible government, we will continue the massive investment in this sector, with the training and retraining of our teachers, making the sector more ICT compliant, exposing our teachers to international best practices as well as ensuring that our schools become a destination for work and learning.

“We resolved to address these problems through combining innovative technological approach that is scientifically based, with effective training and empowering our teachers in every Local Government to strengthen their capacity and deliver quality education to our children.”

The Governor, in a bid to encourage teachers and make good examples from outstanding ones, said the State Government will identify the best Head Teachers in all the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs and reward them with a car each.

He noted that his administration is not paying lip service to the repositioning of the educational sector, noting that it is the reason the education ministry got a significantly higher envelope in the 2020 budget.

The Governor also promised that teachers will undergo free sight assessment and reading glasses will be provided for every teacher that requires it to be able to discharge their duties effectively.

EKOEXCEL, which is Excellence in Child Learning and Education Programme is a Lagos State primary education transformation initiative.

With the EKOEXCEL Programme, over 14,000 Head Teachers and teachers will be moved from analogue to digital teaching, using tablets and updated curriculum. Over 3,000 primary school teachers from 300 public primary schools have been captured under the Pilot Scheme.

An initiative of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, the EKOEXCEL is aimed at developing a highly-skilled teaching workforce by training, supporting and motivating Lagos State teachers to succeed in the classroom of tomorrow and enhance the State Basic Education curriculum thereby empowering children to compete effectively in the world of work.

The programme will equip teachers with skills to deliver value, empower pupils with requisite knowledge to improve education and help in sustaining the growth of Lagos State as a leading knowledge driven city and economy in the world.
