Popular highlife musician, Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya is dead.
The musician, known by the title, The Doyen of Highlife was 89 years before his death. He gave up the ghost at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) at 12noon on Wednesday, 12th February, 2020.
His death was confirmed in an announcement made by Bimbo Esho, Managing Director of Evergreen Music Company LTD.

” This untimely incident happened at Luth hospital Lagos State at exactly 12noon today Wednesday 12th of February, 2020.. We pray that the Doyen of highlife music find repose with the creator while wishing the family and entire music community the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.. And to my name sake Abimbola Olaiya I will miss your contribution to HIGHLIFE MUSIC. Dr Victor Abimbola Olaiya was *89 years of age* on December 31st, 2019.”
Papingo Dalaya, as the highlife maestro is called, was born on the 31st of December, 1930 in Calabar, Cross River State but hails from Ijesha-Ishu, Ekiti State.
He retired from his long music career in 2017 and had some hit tracks like Omopupa, Aigana, Pambotoriboto, Opataritius, Mo fe Muyan, Jemila, Kosowo l’ode, Odale Ore, So fun mi, Omolanke, Tina Mate, among others.
The highlife legend featured Innocent Idibia called Tubaba in the remix of Baby Jowo in 2013.
Olaiya formed his band, the Cool Cats in 1954 but later renamed it the All-Star.
Eidris Abdul-Kareem allegedly assaults Landlord; gets quizzed by police
EIDRIS Abdul-Kareem, the Nigeria Jaga Jaga singer was last week quizzed by the police in Lagos for allegedly assaulting his landlord, The Nation learnt on Sunday.
Abdul-Kareem was arrested by detectives attached to the Area F Command in Ikeja after the landlord Oladipo Abimbola filed a complaint against him.
It was gathered trouble started after the landlord accused the singer of fraud, harassment and intimidation following the singer’s alleged refusal to pay his electricity bill.
Sources said on January 3, Abimbola directed officials of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution (IE) to cut power to Abdul-Kareem’s apartment at Valley View Estate, Ikeja after his unpaid bills accumulated to N535,000.
Angered by the development, the singer, according to the landlord, forced his way into his compound and made to beat him up and strangle him.
Abimbola said he never knew the apartment was rented by the singer as it was his wife who came for the accommodation.
Appealing to the police to come to his aid, Abimbola alleged that Abdul-Kareem was an antisocial and dangerous person, adding that such people stop at nothing to carry out their threat.
He claimed that the singer constantly owed him rent.
The singer denied attempting to assault the man, saying he only warned him.
The singer said he warned his landlord because the man sexually harassed his wife in his absence and had refused to respect their privacy. He said Abimbola frequently encroached on their side of the compound without permission, adding that the man had previously been arrested for alleged sexual harassment of another female tenant.
It is not the first time the singer is getting into trouble. His hit song Nigeria jaga jaga once earned him rebuke from then President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Jaga jaga is a local term denoting something in very bad shape.

Popular Nollywood Actress, Abimbola Akinsanya, has disclosed that her marriage was short-lived because she didn’t want to kill.
The Yoruba movie star, popularly known as “Omo Oloja”stated this in a recent post in her Instagram handle, saying it was not an easy decision.
According to her, she left the union because she did not want to die and because she wanted to protect herself too, adding that she did not want to become a murderer.
She wrote: “I left that marriage when my son was just 3 months old, you think it was easy to make that decision? No.
“I left early cos I didn’t want to die, I left early cos I didn’t want to lose my child, I left early cos I didn’t want to be a murderer. (It’s a story for another day) I was married for a year and 4-months and it was hellish.
“Hello,” DO NOT KILL ANOTHER PERSON’S CHILD” all in the name of marriage, I am also a mother and I know how I am striving to train and feed my son. Please, don’t pray or wish for a mother to labour in vain oooo,.. ,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the actress got married to her son’s father, Olawale Ayoola in May 2014, but the union was short- lived as the couple parted ways after ja year and few months later.
In 2015, she also revealed that she would rather stay single if marriage like the one she had last was all that was left in the world.
“I didn’t enjoy a bit of my married life while with my former husband.
“I had to sneak out of my marriage with my little baby boy when life became so hot for me.
“AIl I need to say is that, I’m free from the bondage of captivity. I can no longer subject myself to incessant beating like a punching bag.
She said that her husband did not regard her as his wife because he was fond of committing several atrocities that were unprintable.
“He’s such a womanizer that has no competitor, the painful aspect of the matter is that he flirted around with married women of all kinds,” she stressed.
She is not just an actress known for well interpreted roles in movies, she is also a producer.
Some of the movies she produced are; Agbara Ife, Soko Sale, among others.
The union was blessed with a son.

The duo of rap star Kanye West and reality TV star Kim Kardashian will no doubt rank high should a list of favourite celebrity couples be compiled.
However, new reports suggest that there may be trouble in their paradise as they are reportedly seeing a sex doctor in a bid to reignite the spark in their romance.
Radar Online reports that the 42-year-old “Jesus Is King” rapper and his 39-year-old wife had to turn to a love therapist in a bid to save their failing marriage by focusing on their problems in the bedroom.
The couple who share four children reportedly began to grow apart in the wake of West’s religious awakening and the birth of their fourth child via surrogate in May 2019.
Kim was allegedly “not happy” with her “really strange marriage” to her outspoken husband, the outlet said in December.
“Kanye is going through a really tough time right now. It is really hard for Kim to deal with.
“She is stressed dealing with his mood swings and manic episodes,” the insider said of how the KKW founder struggles with her husband’s ongoing battle with his mental health.
A source told Radar Online:
“They have therapy sessions at least once a week where they each vent about their frustrations to an expert, who gives tips about how to open up and communicate better.”
It is also reported that things appear to be getting better since the couple started counselling. The source continued:
“The therapist is giving them suggestions to put the sizzle back in their sex life,
“They tried counseling a couple of years ago, and it essentially saved their marriage. They’re hoping lightning can strike twice,” the insider added.
Neither Kim nor Kanye has responded to the reports.
Kim and Kanye had an Italian wedding ceremony in 2014.
